Weather radar gauge - VC overlay impossible? Thread starter roland_lfor; Start. 26 Dec 2014 #1. 26 Dec 2014 #1. Hi, I'm new to FSDeveloper and new to Fsx gauge devpt as well, so please forgive me if I have 'newbie' questions (sure I will). (Squawkbox, multiplayer p2p system.). I'm working on a weather radar gauge to use.
Thought it was worth mentioning this, in case our ASN users hadn't heard about it yet. Roland Herblot's weather radar gauge is the most realistic available now and it's free, although it requires ActiveSky Next. Get it from the Avsim file library as.
You'll need Microsoft's VC 2013 x86 runtime too, if you don't already have it installed. He's done a special version that integrates with the Majestic Q400 MFD: And also popped it in the PMDG J41: ASN comes with a radar but it presents a 'top down' view from a satellite, not the airborne type image Roland's gauge shows. You'll need to adjust gain and tilt to get an accurate picture and beware of radar shadow and ground clutter!
There's a nice topic on the limitations of airborne radar at. I got around to doing a quick test with it tonight and it works very nicely. You can control the tilt and range using the mouse wheel over a couple of spots on the gauge. I couldn't however find a way to control the gain nor is there a way to turn it on/off independently. When the battery is turned on the weather radar powers up.

I've asked Roland about this over at the Avsim forum so I'll wait and see what he comes back with. Neither are deal breakers as this is still great for the price (free!) however being able to control the gain and turn it on/off would be nice additions if he could add them. Cheers, Serge. For those of you that haven't yet heard, Active Sky 2016 (AS16) was released last week.
I have it and can confirm that Roland's radar gauge works fine with it, although I haven't yet used it during a proper flight. AS16 once again includes it's own radar gauge which I've yet to try.
If you have a previous version of ActiveSky you will get an upgrade discount and I'd say it's well worth it (unless you're using ASN, as it isn't such a big step-up although I never used ASN myself). As ever, Hifi are offering a week free trial of the product to anyone.
If you do buy it, it's expensive (€46+VAT for the FSX version or €28+VAT if you're upgrading from an old version of Active Sky. ASCA is another €18+VAT. If you're patient there'll be a 30% sale eventually)! The new ActiveSky Cloud Art (ASCA) sounds good on paper (it changes cloud textures and 3D models as you're flying to increase depiction accuracy) but I've not spent the extra $20 on it as I'm happy with REX4TD+SC for now (I run the weather theme wizard before starting the sim).
Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:01 pm Can anyone recommend a FSX addon for a Weather Radar Guage or Panel? I've found a freeware program called FS FLIGHTMAX, but it looks like it's just for FS2002 and earlier. Also, on a recent flight on a 737 I noticed a video screen in the cockpit that looked like a combination of a GPS and a Airport Diagram, which looked like it would greatly benefit pilots navigating from the gate to the Runway and the Runway to the gate.
Does such a thing exist in real world or in Flight sim? Wed Nov 03, 2010 4:20 pm I just purchased Reality XP's weather radar and have been using it on all of my VATSIM flights and some of my non VATSIM and it has surprised me how accurate it was. It takes some messing with to tune in the dials and figure out how to work the gauge but I am impressed and a few other reviewers were impressed as well.
It essentially shows a reading of severe weather and somewhat shows what the moisture in the air looks like. Don't expect to see 3d models of the clouds and what level they are cause that is not what you'll get for $25. But if you want something to help you steer clear of thunder storms then this little dohicky will do the trick. Thu Nov 04, 2010 6:36 pm Anyone know how the EFB program compares with the Flight Sim Commander program? FS Commander appears to have the 2 things I'm looking for, The Airport Diagram Moveable Map and the Weather Radar. I'm test driving the EFB program for 30 days and it seems to be an excellent program. I'm certain if I had a setup with more power and memory and I could use 2 or 3 monitors I could utilize it more efectively.
One of the really nice features I like is when I build a flight plan and select a DP or STAR, it tells me which one enters from the North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, etc. That is something I have always wished the other Flight Plan programs would offer. One thing is for certain, it really is a program for experts. Users who figure out how to tweak it to thier liking will certainly LOVE it.
Sat Feb 11, 2012 2:45 am The best weather radar for FSX is from a company called 'Reality XP Simulation', the product is called the 'Wx500-FSX'. It looks and works great and fits all FSX aircraft. (now the catch) If you have problems with it there is advertised customer support but the reality of 'Reality XP Simulation' is there is no customer support. I had the 'Wx500' program installed in my 'Flight 1' ATR72-500 and it worked great for a month.
One day I'm setting up a flight and I get a message reading that there is a problem with the 'Wx500'. After trying to reach the so called customer support at 'Reality XP' for (no kidding) 3 months I finally gave up. They never bothered to contact me back and ignored all my request for help. But if your good with technical stuff I highly recomend the 'Wx500', it was a dream when it worked. Good luck, JC.
